Literature and Oracy Lesson

The Year 3.2 students were divided in groups.  Each group was given a set of picture cards of the story The Lion and the Mouse.  Students had to put them in the order they think was right.  Students displayed the cards on the table.  Then, students listened to the story and checked if their cards were in the correct order.  Students listened to the story again and a  worksheet was given to them.  Pupils had to fill in the table (integrated with a Math lesson) by ticking under the correct heading.  Finally,  in groups, students narrated the story (picture cards were used as prompts).

Show and Tell

Show and tellStudents learn a number of literacy skills at school. Since the introduction of the Benchmark Exam, oracy has been given its importance, being recognised as one of the major skills required by students to enhance their literacy skills.

A good method to enhance oracy skills is by giving students the opportunity to speak to an audience about a topic, book, hobby, etc.

During one of the oracy sessions, Ms Tiziana, the year 6 teacher, asked her students to prepare a “show and tell” session about a book they read. Students who needed to enhance their Maltese language skills were asked to prepare a book in Maltese, while others were asked to prepare a book in English.

Every student was given time to speak to their classmates about the book they read, giving a brief description of the book, the genre of the book and whether they liked the book or not.
