Sunny Fieldwork at Marsaxlokk

Marsaxlokk01

On Thursday 12th November 2015, our Year 5 pupils went to Marsaxlokk to carry out a Social Studies fieldwork exercise valid for their half-yearly exams. The weather was fantastic for this time of the year (thanks to St. Martin) which put a smile on everyone’s face. Marsaxlokk02

Friendly fishermen and street hawkers readily exchanged a few words with the children, and also complimented the latter on being very well behaved. Many tourists were also amused to see them diligently carrying out their tasks, and the kids repaid their attention with lots of waves and hellos. Marsaxlokk03

It was a truly enjoyable and instructive experience for the children, who were keen in showing their appreciation both during the outing as well as following our return to school. What a fun way to learn! Marsaxlokk04

The Year 5.2 students went for their social studies fieldwork at Marsaxlokk. During their visit the students had to find out information about this fishing village.Marsaxlokk02

The students had a great time learning by doing while exploring every detail of Marsaxlokk. Apart from doing the research the students were asked to draw their own works of art to representing the locality of Marsaxlokk.

Social Studies Fieldwork

On 13th November 2014, the year 5.2 students of Ms Sharon Calleja, went to Masaxlokk. This outing was related to their social studies fieldwork. At Marsaxlokk the students saw and talked about many things related to fishing and acquaculture.

Social

Student were given a booklet to work out and fill and while storlling around Marsaxlokk to find the answers to their questions. The students saw different fishing boats – their size, colours, use and even maintenance work being done on a luzzu.  They were lucky enough to meet a group of fishermen and women who were cleaning their nets and getting ready for their next fishing trip. This gave the students the opportunity to learn about their work.

Later they met another group of fishermen who were ready from their fishing trip and were pulling their boat up for maintenance works. This was such a wonderful learning experience for the students who had the opportunity to see what the teacher had been explaining in class right there in Marsaxlokk!

Marsaxlokk Fieldwork

On Thursday 13th November 2014 the two Year 5 classes went to Marsaxlokk to carry out a Social Studies fieldwork exercise valid for their half yearly exams. Much to our delight, it was a surprisingly hot and sunny morning, presenting ideal conditions to explore this picturesque fishing village.

The children took their job very seriously and seemed like little detectives looking for clues and evidence to complete their tasks. We could watch many people at their work, including fishermen (and women), street hawkers and restaurant workers. There were also many tourists and children from other schools who were also doing their fieldwork exercise, and we had to be careful not to step on each other’s toes. All in all there was a very friendly atmosphere, and at one time even a native dog came to greet us warmly when we stopped for a lunch break! At the end of the trip we all concluded that it had been a satisfactory and fulfilling experience.

Birgu & Marsaxlokk educational outing

On Friday 21st February 2014 the two Year 5 classes went to visit two important places in the south of Malta: the old city of Birgu and Marsaxlokk fishing village.

Birgu001 In Birgu they toured the characteristic narrow streets and identified a number of historical buildings and monuments. They visited the Inquisitor’s Palace (where there was some filming taking place) and then walked along the waterfront up to Fort St. Angelo, while admiring the beautiful yachts berthed at the Yacht Marina.

Birgu002

In Marsaxlokk they could observe the various fishing boats and nets from up close, while some pupils took the opportunity to speak with a few of the fishermen and women who were busy at their work.

Marsaxlokk001

In both places we could notice a good number of tourists enjoying Malta’s sights or savouring a tasty meal at one of the numerous restaurants we encountered on our path. Delicious!
