Social Studies Fieldwork

As part of the Social Studies Curricula, the Year 3 students carried out a fieldwork in their school locality.  Students had to observed the environment surrounding the school.  Among other things, pupils discussed and noted the differences  and similarities between buildings,  compared the two main streets surrounding the school,  observed the different types of vehicles that passed from a main road and they also talked about the different shops one can find in the vicinity. Students recorded the information gathered in  their fieldwork booklet.

Social Studies Fieldwork – Għadira Nature Reserve

Across the curricula we integrate key sustainable issues in teaching and learning.  Indeed, as part of the Social Studies syllabus students are given the opportunity to visit a nature reserve and carry out the given fieldwork. On the 28th of May, the Year 3 students visited the Għadira Nature Reserve.  There, they had the opportunity to see the different trees that grow in Malta and observe and learn more information about the flora and fauna of the Maltese islands.  Furthermore, the pupils also discussed how they can help protect the environment.  This fieldwork helped students to understand better what they had learned in class.

Social

Student were given a booklet to work out and fill and while storlling around Marsaxlokk to find the answers to their questions. The students saw different fishing boats – their size, colours, use and even maintenance work being done on a luzzu.  They were lucky enough to meet a group of fishermen and women who were cleaning their nets and getting ready for their next fishing trip. This gave the students the opportunity to learn about their work.

Later they met another group of fishermen who were ready from their fishing trip and were pulling their boat up for maintenance works. This was such a wonderful learning experience for the students who had the opportunity to see what the teacher had been explaining in class right there in Marsaxlokk!
