Celebrating Diversity

All students are special in their own way. Inclusion allows for diversity and for students to learn to appreciate the beautiful rainbow our world is made of. These photos are a celebration of diversity and inclusion… All children love carnival. Inspire provides a sensory playroom…

Given the correct resources, all students can learn. Dedicated Learning Support Assistants walk that extra mile to prepare resources to learn about people  in the community along with class group, to sort nouns by placing pictures in the correct box, to sort animals according to the letter with which they begin and to learn plurals.

Hard working Learning Support Assistants work in silence and their work may be overseen. Thank you Ms Charmaine for opening a window on the work being done by Learning Support Assistants and thanks goes to the parents for willingly sharing their son’s experiences.

 

Learning shapes

The Yr 3.2 students of Ms Miranda had a very interesting lesson about flat shapes. First, students had a presentation where they had to try and guess the name of the flat shape that was partially hidden. Then students discussed the properties of the various shapes. Finally they had group work which involved creating their own flat shapes using lollipop sticks, a “domino” game where students had to solve clues before moving on to the next question, sorting shapes according to their category, and drawing a picture using flat shapes only to create a car, house and robot.Shapes01

Length Activities…

The Yr 3.1 students of Ms Sharon learnt about length and the different units used for measurement. They learnt how to estimate lengths of objects as well as decided which unit would be most suitable to best measure a given object. Finally the students learnt how to measure and draw lines using a cm ruler.

In the first activity the children measured the length of objects given on cards (glue stick, pencil, etc.) followed by actually measuring the length of real life objects found in the classroom such as the length of a book, pencil, crayon, chair, door, etc.

In the second activity the students talked about the story of Pinocchio and focused on the part where his nose grew when telling lies. Each group was given a flashcard with the picture of Pinocchio and they had to measure the length of his nose. The length of the noses were different for each group, thus, there was a rotation of cards until all groups measured all the different lengths of Pinocchio’s nose.

Common and Proper Nouns

To revise the topic Common and Proper Nouns, Ms Miranda, class teacher of Yr 3.2, divided the class in four groups.  Each group was given 2 large mats: one for common nouns and another for proper nouns.  A set of flashcards was also given to each group.  The pupils had to sort these flashcards using the mats.  After, they had to place them on one of the four boxes entitled person, animal, place and thing on the mentioned mats. nouns02

Money, money, money…

During a maths lesson the Yr 3.2 students of Ms Miranda were divided In groups. Each group was given a number of coins ranging from 50c to 1c.   The groups had to imagine that they were going to buy a particular object assigned to them.  Students had to use different coins to make the same amount.  In so doing children learned that they can make the same amount using different coins and rehearsed working out totals beyond 20c.

Odd and Even

The Yr 3.2 students of Ms Miranda were given a set of playing cards per group.  Children had to sort the playing cards in two sets: multiples of 2 and the other remaining cards.  Students gave different explanations about the sorted sets.  One group stated that the multiples of 2 are even numbers so the other set of cards had to be odd.  While the other group said that the multiples of 2 can be equally shared/divided. Later, each group had to draw groups of even and odd using symbols found on the playing cards.

Learning Maltese – Xemxin u Qamrin

The yr 3.1 students of Ms Sharon during group work held in class. During the Maltese lesson students talked about konsonanti qamrin u xemxin. The children were divided in groups. Each group was given a task card with a set of instructions on them. Namely, they had to read the list of words given (each group had a different set of words). Then they had to categorize the words in 2 groups – qamrin / xemxin.  On the mini whiteboard they drew a sun and a moon. They wrote the qamrin words in the moon and the xemxin words in the sun.

 

Shake and Wake…

shakeThe school day can be very long and students need to be given breaks to stimulate their brains and to enhance their concentration. In these photos of the Yr 3.1 children are doing, what Ms Sharon calls, a Wake and Shake!  When the students’ energy levels drop low, the teacher allows students to get out of their seats and move about. Students listen, watch and dance to the Wake and Shake song which is displayed on the interactive whiteboard.

Using our taste buds

During a Science lesson the yr 3.1 students of Ms Sharon were talking about the 5 senses. In the above photo students were focused on the sense of taste. They learnt about taste buds found on the tongue which help us taste things we eat, depending on whether they are sweet or sour. The children tasted different food with their eyes closed and relied solely on their sense of taste to guess what the food was – (carrot, broccoli, lemon, popcorn, cereal, chocolate and biscuit). All students guessed what their food was and really enjoyed the activity!

Ordering numbers

During Maths, the yr 31 students were talking about how to order a set of given numbers from smallest to largest. Numbers were compared by deciding which was the smallest or largest from a given set of numbers. Finally, the class talked about finding a number in between 2 given numbers. In a group work activity, the students were given a set of numbers and asked to find the smallest number, then the larger number and finally the number that falls in between.
