K1.1 – Penguins
The Penguins topic emerged when a group of children were playing with small plastic animals using kinetic sand in a tuff tray.
Children love animals so I decided to start by mentioning some characteristics of penguins. Where and how penguins live. They can stay on land or in water. They also use their flippers to help them to swim. Penguins eat fish and drink sea water. While they live in the snow, they huddle each other to stay warm. Penguins are covered in feathers.
Every day we made penguin crafts besides other activities. Mathematical concepts included penguin counting, ice-hopping game and comparing penguin height and weight with that of the children.
Recognition of letter p, treasure hunt search, tracing and drawing in salt, spaghetti and shaving foam writing.
Children learned new vocabulary by listening to penguin songs, stories and labelling penguin body parts.
Several outdoor activities were ice-berg hopping, penguin freeze and penguin waddling race. Children used their gross motor skills by jumping, diving, slipping like penguins do.
We have finished this interesting topic about penguins by making cracker penguin faces, eating ice-cream and ice-cube sensory play.
