Olympic Quiz

Three Year 6 students from Ms Sharon D’Amico’s class participated in a first time edition Olympic Quiz held for year 6 students. The students had to study content about the Olympic Games from a book during the Christmas holidays. The quiz will be aired on TV.

Although the students did not make it to the final, they still made us proud. They were also awarded a T-shirt each as recognition for their effort and participation. Well done for your commitment 🙂

Equestrian Sessions for Our Students

The Year 5 students started a series of equestrian sessions at the Sunflower Park.

Students had some time to get to know the lovely ponies and horses residing at this park.

They also had great fun riding the ponies and horses.

This was a great experience for the students. In fact one student told his teacher that this was the best outing ever. In the following sessions students will learn how to groom ponies and horses and how to take care of them.

Festive Season E-Safety Event

An internet e-safety event was organised for the Year 5 and Yr 6 students by the healthy and safety teacher, Ms Jacqueline Abela and the digital literacy support teacher, Ms Laura Schembri.

Students used their laptops to scan QR codes which were displayed in the school hall.

Every code was linked to a safety measure that needs to be taken to make our homes safer this Christmas.

In the above photos students have shared some of the safety tips they learnt. Such sessions are a true example of how technology can be used to embrace a meaningful learning experience.

Enhancing Thinking Skills Through Maths

The Maths lesson was about adding and subtracting decimals. The students were split into 4 groups and they had to work in stations.  After 15 minutes each group changed station.

Station 1: The students were given a set of cards to create numbers with. They were then to add or subtract the numbers (according to their own choice) and then compare answers. A decimal point had to be used!

Station 2: The students were given a Number Search where they were given different adding or subtracting decimal sums and then asked to find the answer in the sheet.

Station 3:  The students were given a Crack the Code activity. Each letter represented a digit from 0 to 9. They had to find the answers and solve the sums.

Station 4: Classwork from the Maths Textbook related to the particular lesson.

Modifications: Another crack the code was planned just in case students finished early. Students were asked to create their own sums from the number search in case they finished early as well. An easier Crack the Code and Number Search was also provided for students who found it difficult.

Literacy Activity involving listening to instructions to make a toast and hot chocolate…

The students were also involved in watching a short video clip about the origin of chocolate and answering questions about it thus enhancing their listening and comprehension skills.
Finally they proceeded to write instructions for making hot chocolate (in English) and toast (in Maltese) using the correct step-by-step way of doing so.
While working on their literacy activity, the students enjoyed at hot cuppa!!!
