Enhancing Thinking Skills Through Maths

The Maths lesson was about adding and subtracting decimals. The students were split into 4 groups and they had to work in stations.  After 15 minutes each group changed station.

Station 1: The students were given a set of cards to create numbers with. They were then to add or subtract the numbers (according to their own choice) and then compare answers. A decimal point had to be used!

Station 2: The students were given a Number Search where they were given different adding or subtracting decimal sums and then asked to find the answer in the sheet.

Station 3:  The students were given a Crack the Code activity. Each letter represented a digit from 0 to 9. They had to find the answers and solve the sums.

Station 4: Classwork from the Maths Textbook related to the particular lesson.

Modifications: Another crack the code was planned just in case students finished early. Students were asked to create their own sums from the number search in case they finished early as well. An easier Crack the Code and Number Search was also provided for students who found it difficult.

Addition

Students used the tens frames and caps to help them count a 2-digit number with a 1-digit number that total  20 or less.  Using these resources from their Maths Toolbox students realised that they can add numbers in any order and get the same result.

Comparing Numbers

In the photos the year 3.1 students are seen participating in two different activities involving creating 1-digit and 2-digit numbers with dice and later with playing cards.  They created different amounts and types of numbers, according to their abilities, and then, they compared the numbers they created by using the symbols <, > or =.

Subtracting multiples of 10

During another number of Mathematics lessons, the year 3.1 students learned how to subtract 10 and other multiples of 10 from a 2-digit number.  The students enjoyed watching songs and videos about this topic as well as participating in hands-on activities to take 10 away from a 2-digit number.  In the photos they are seen participating in four different grouped rotating activities during our final lesson about this topic.

Subtracting

The year 3.1 students were learning about different subtraction strategies during different Mathematics lessons.  They subtracted numbers by counting back as well as by counting on.  The topic was introduced with concrete situations involving hands-on activities.  The students later moved on to pictorial representations of taking away and finally, they practiced the abstract part of subtracting number sums.  In the photos they are seen using interlocking cubes to help them work out subtraction sums.
