Science Experiment: Magnetic or Non-Magnetic

Last week the year 3.2 students were learning about magnetic and non magnetic materials during the Science lesson with their class teacher Ms Sharon Calleja.

The children watched a video about magnetism and later they discussed the topic of magnetism with their teacher. They also carried out an experiment to determine whether certain materials are magnetic or not.

In groups, the children were given a magnet and a set of different materials, namely a plastic spoon, a 2c coin, a piece of foil, a pair of metal scissors, a metal nail and a key. First, the children had to guess if each object would be attracted to the magnet or not. Then, they had to test each object and match their prediction with what actually happened during the experiment. Finally, they recorded their results in a table, thus integrating Mathematics with our Science lesson.

Science – Tasting Activity

After learning about the five senses, the year 3.2 students participated in different activities in order to use all of their five senses.  The activities included observing a picture in order to find hidden objects in it, paying attention to different sounds they heard and stating what they were, touching objects they use in class every day, comparing and contrasting things having different smells and determining which smells are harmful to us. Finally, they had a tasting activity.  The students could not see what they were tasting. They could only determine what it was by using their sense of taste and thinking about whether what they tasted was sweet or sour, whether it felt soft or crunchy whilst eating it and obviously by what it tasted like. The students tasted things like bell peppers, pretzels, lemons, chocolate, popcorn, biscuits and so on.  It was truly an activity that appealed to all our five senses!

Learning by doing…

The Yr 2.2 students of Ms Stephanie are always very busy. Their lessons involve many hands-on activities which allow the students time to learn, think and relearn. In the above photos students had to build cubes using lollipop sticks. They also had a go a investigating counting in tens and how to make a cloud in a jar. Below students were given tasks to sort numbers in order, to learn about odd and even, plurals and story sums.
