This week the Yr 3.1 students, of Ms Sharon Calleja, have been learning abut money during Maths. The children learned about the different coins of the Euro currency. They were involved in several hands-on activities and group work to help them understand the concept of money.
One of the activities involved the students counting an amount of money given in a purse. The students had to count the coins and give the correct total.
The second activity was a group investigation, called “How many coins make …?” Different groups were given different amounts of money and asked to find out how many coins made that amount. (For example, how many 10c coins make €1? How many 50c coins make €1? How many 1c coins make 50c? How many 5c coins make 50c? and so on). Each group was also given specimen coins so as to find the required amounts by handling tangible objects.
