Counting in 2s and 5s

countingThe Yr 2.2. students of Ms Stephanie had a very interesting Maths lesson. Children explored various ways of counting in 2s and 5s. Such learning sessions are very important as they prepare the foundations for manipulating numbers when learning tables. During one of the activities the students made their own hand prints, using paint, and then wrote the number of fingers under each hand print by counting in fives.

Money, money, money…

Money

During a maths lesson the Yr 3.2 students of Ms Miranda were divided In groups. Each group was given a number of coins ranging from 50c to 1c.   The groups had to imagine that they were going to buy a particular object assigned to them.  Students had to use different coins to make the same amount.  In so doing children learned that they can make the same amount using different coins and rehearsed working out totals beyond 20c.

Odd and Even

Odd

The Yr 3.2 students of Ms Miranda were given a set of playing cards per group.  Children had to sort the playing cards in two sets: multiples of 2 and the other remaining cards.  Students gave different explanations about the sorted sets.  One group stated that the multiples of 2 are even numbers so the other set of cards had to be odd.  While the other group said that the multiples of 2 can be equally shared/divided. Later, each group had to draw groups of even and odd using symbols found on the playing cards.

Maths… Exploring factors

The Yr 6.2 students of Mr Matthew during a Maths activity, where they were asked to create a Factor House. The number was placed at the top of the house (on the roof), and the factors of this number were the windows of the house. Factors that when multiplied gave the given number, were placed next to one another. This helped the students to better understand the concept. They really had fun carrying out the activity and team work was a great success!

The Yr 2.2 students of Ms Stephanie have been busy working on various aspects. In the photos students can be seen working with numbers by ordering using a number line, making a plant collage to learn about the different parts of a plant, working in groups to learn new vocabulary and doing Show & Tell about their family or their favorite animal.

This week the Yr 3.1 students, of Ms Sharon Calleja, have been learning abut money during Maths. The children learned about the different coins of the Euro currency. They were involved in several hands-on activities and group work  to help them understand the concept of money. coins02

One of the activities involved the students counting an amount of money given in a purse. The students had to count the coins and give the correct total.coins03

The second activity was a group investigation, called “How many coins make …?” Different groups were given different amounts of money and asked to find out how many coins made that amount. (For example, how many 10c coins make €1? How many 50c coins make €1? How many 1c coins make 50c? How many 5c coins make 50c? and so on).  Each group was also given specimen coins so as to find the required amounts by handling tangible objects. coins04
