Fun with Pairs…

pairsAbove are the Year 3.2 students of Ms Sharon Calleja during a group work activity. The children were learning about pairs to 10. After explaining pairs to 10 with interlocking cubes, students were divided in groups. Each group had to discuss and write down all the pairs to 10.

 

Learning Maths through play and use of techonology

Probot

During the Maths lesson children used Pro-Bots to create angles.  In so doing they investigated the relationship between angles and degrees.  Indeed, the instructions of the angles to be drawn were given as right angles.  Thus children converted the right angles to degrees in order to program the roamer.

High 5 – Junior Mathematicians Challenge

Maths

The High 5 – Junior Mathematicians Challenge targeted gifted and talented primary students who were in Years 5 and 6 during scholastic year 2015 – 2016 in both state and non-state primary schools.

“The aim of this challenges was to give further opportunity to gifted and talented primary students to hone their talents through practice with stimulating mathematical problems.”

3 students from our school, namely Shanice Sammut, Matteo Stagno, Milena Stagno qualified for this challenge and the students had the opportunity to participate in five 2-hour training seminars which took place after school hours.

Matteo Stagno, placed third in the overall competition. Well done to these students for their achievements 🙂

Maths Shopping Activity

Shop02The Year 3.2 students of Ms Stephanie went for a Maths shopping activity in the locality of  Mgarr. During this activity the children had the opportunity to experience, first-hand, shopping groceries for a recipe they had to prepare at school. The children went to a grocery and to the bakery to buy ingredients for a healthy sandwich. They had to pay for the ingredients and make sure they were given the correct change. This activity helped children to learn more about bills, estimates, prices, change and euro coins.

Learning by discovery…

The Yr 3.2 students of Ms Stephanie have been enjoying their daily lessons by learning through discovery. In these photos one can see students working on various activities including place value of numbers, sorting coins, subtracting a one digit number from 20 by rolling a dice, matching numbers to number names and other activities related to Maltese. Such learning experiences provide the students with a positive learning experience 🙂maths02

Time

When learning about time, the year 1.2 students of Ms Marilyn Bugeja were given the opportunity to work together to practice what they knew. They had fun in finding the required clock faces, drawing the hands of the clock and reading the time.

Apart from identifying and drawing clock hands they also practised other group skills!

Hands on capacity!

The year 1.2 students of Ms Marilyn Bugeja  were learning about different amounts of water in the different cups. After talking about the different amounts in different containers, children were asked to fill a number of cups and then, putting them in order starting from the cup holding most to the cup holding the least amount of water.

Maths Workshops for Parents of K1 and K2 students

Maths KinderOn 30th January 2015 a meeting for was held for the parents of the new kindergarten entrants. Following this meeting a maths work, by Ms Joanne Vella, Maths Support teacher, was held for all the parents of students in both kinder 1 and kinder 2. Parents enjoyed these sessions and showed a keen interest in the new methods being used in mathematics.
