It’s that time of the year again…

Novena Day1December – an important month for us Christians… It reminds of the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ. During this month we remember the hardships Mary and Joseph had to face and the poor circumstances in which the Lord chose to be born. It is a time of reflection about the important things in life – not material ones, but spiritual ones.

Novena Day2

Students are encouraged to prepare a special assembly in a run up for Christmas. This special assembly is spread over 9 days, hence it is called the novena. During these assemblies the students, under the direction of their teachers and LSAs, and with the help of Ms Borg Vella, assistant head, the students explore moral values and issues which remind us of love, peace and generosity.

Novena Day3

This is also an opportunity for students to sing Christmas carols, to animate our morning assemblies and to enhance their self-esteem. Merry Christmas to all 🙂

Fieldwork at Valletta

The year 6 students of Ms Raisa Cutajar and Ms Ingrid Frendo went for an educational outing at Valletta. During their visit in the capital city of Malta, the students did fieldwork related to the social studies syllabus. This was an excellent hands-on learning opportunity for students.

Valletta

A snapshot of year 6.1

The Yr 6.1 students of Ms Raisa Cutajar have kick started the year through a number of various activities. An element of fun is always present. The photos taken in the school playing area evidence of this.

Year 6.1

The teacher enhances team work in her maths lessons and students have been learning fractions by helping each other other sorting their “pizza fractions”.

Year 6.1 (3)

The students are also given the opportunity to enhance their creativity by making their own collages using pasta and other recycled material to create “faces”.

Year 6.1 (2)

well done 🙂

Youth Manifesto and the Commissioner for Children

On 20th June 2014 a Youth Manisfesto was organised at our school for the year 6 students. The aim of this session was for the Commissioner of Children, Mrs Helen D’Amato, to make our students aware of the importance of internet safety and of having a more secure and interesting internet service.

Manifesto

The students played an interesting game. Important messages lay within this game, such as the importance of not giving personal information on the internet, the helpline 179 and others.

The children contributed by giving their feedback and suggestions on the following website:

www.tfal.org.mt and www.youthmanifesto.eu

We encourage all our students to visit the above sites which are tailored made for their needs.

The school would like to thank Mrs D’Amato and her team for having given our students the opportunity to voice their opinion and to give their feedback on such an important issue.

Marathon Walk 2014

On Tuesday 29th April 2014 the school embarked on a Marathon Walk. The children had been given sponsor sheets with the aim of collecting funds for the school council.

Marathon001 (1)

This Marathon Walk was linked to Science Fieldwork which was co-ordinated by the science teacher, Ms Charmaine Mifsud, together with the class teachers.

Marathon001 (2)

Year 3 to year 6 students were stopped at Dingli, near the football pitch. From there they walked approximately 4km to Buskett. On arriving at Buskett the students were given a 30 minute break, followed by a 45 minute field work session. Students learnt about various leaves, temperature readings in the shade and in the sun light, insects and other interesting things related to Science and Technology. The students then walked back to Dingli, following a shorter route. The students covered another 3.7km in 45 minutes.

Marathon001 (3)

The Kinder 1 to Year 2 students were dropped at Buskett. They had their fieldwork which was adapted by the class teachers according to their age. Ms Portelli and Ms Schembri joined us in the venture to give an extra helping hand.

Well done to the students and members of staff for making this yet another successful event. The school takes the opportunity to thank all parents for this noble cause.

Consumer’s Day

Many of us may not be aware that on 15th March we celeberate Consumers’ Day. We are all consumers in one way or another. During their special assembly, the year 6.1 students of Ms Tiziana Borg, gave our students some information about who consumers are, their rights and their obligations.

Consumer

The children presented a short play during which a young lady went to purchase a dress. She later called the consumer department to place a complaint. The aim behind this short play was to make students aware that consumers are to make wise decisions when purchasing items and that when placing a complaint, this must be for a valid reason.

Dr Charmaine Gauci, Director for Health Promotion and Disease Preventition, together with her teams of professionals, organised a workshop for our students.

The session kicked off with some warm up and stretching exercises, emphasising the need for exercise required by our body on a daily basis. A brief dicussion about breakfast followed. The students were then introduced to varying fruit and vegetables which were sorted according to colour. Finally the students prepared fruit kebabs with fruit  which was kindly provided by the Local Council.

The students and members of staff would like to express their heart felt thanks to the Minister for Health, the Health Promotion Unit and the Local Council for this opportunity 😉

Science and Technolgy Project Yr 5 and Yr 6

Science Yr 5The year 5 and year 6 students have been busy during the past science lessons. The students were given a task to build  a crane which could raise and lower a load. The load had to be raised or lowered by 50 cm.

Science Yr 6

The students were not allowed to use metal objects (except for the hook of the crane). They were allowed to use cardboard boxes. Students were divided into groups and had to design their own crane, build it, make a suitable base to keep the crane steady (e.g. by using stones, wood, etc.) and they had to test out their crane.

The students enjoyed doing their projects while enhancing team building skills. Well done to all 🙂
