Show and Tell

Show and tellStudents learn a number of literacy skills at school. Since the introduction of the Benchmark Exam, oracy has been given its importance, being recognised as one of the major skills required by students to enhance their literacy skills.

A good method to enhance oracy skills is by giving students the opportunity to speak to an audience about a topic, book, hobby, etc.

During one of the oracy sessions, Ms Tiziana, the year 6 teacher, asked her students to prepare a “show and tell” session about a book they read. Students who needed to enhance their Maltese language skills were asked to prepare a book in Maltese, while others were asked to prepare a book in English.

Every student was given time to speak to their classmates about the book they read, giving a brief description of the book, the genre of the book and whether they liked the book or not.

Unfortunately the weather did not work in our favour since it rained all day. However the games were held in the school hall with some slight adjustments. The children enjoyed themselves.

In the afternoon “San Martin Bags” were given to the children. Well done to the organisers. A special thanks goes to the parents on the school council and the parent helpers 🙂

SEDQA sessions for Year 6

sedqa (1)On Thursday 28th November 2013, the year 6 students had an interesting workshop held by SEDQA. During this session the animator talked to the children about various vices such as smoking, drugs and learning how  to say NO! They discussed the topic abuse and learnt how to make good use of the helpline 179.

The students were given a workbook which they worked out together in class. They had a craft session during which the students made their own crafts using shapes and wrote down captions about things people should not to do such as: “Don’t Smoke!”

To conclude this session the students had a drama session during which the children, in pairs, had to role play various situations where one student had to say no to the pressure being imposed by the other.

This was a very rewarding session for the students during which they learnt important lessons for life. We thank SEDQA for the work they are doing for the community.

NAPO visits year 6

NAPO (8)NAPO (9)NAPO (16)

The Occupational Health and Safety staff prepared an interesting workshop for our 6 students.  The official mascot of the campaign NAPO (as created by a European Agency for Safety and Health at Work) visited our school on 27th November 2013.

During the visit, students were guided through a short film featuring NAPO and a poster exhibition targeting mainly health and safety signs. An interactive talk followed. NAPO distributed an informative and educational activity booklet produced by the OHSA which the students could work on in class or home.

Maths Workshops for year 6

Maths (1)Maths is an integral part of our daily routine. Sometimes students struggle with this subject. However, our teachers always do their best to present maths as a fun activity.

The best way to learn maths is through hand-ons activities, where students learn by discovery. With the support of our Maths support teacher, a number of maths lessons are being delivered at school with the aim of having students coming up with their own solutions and discoveries during a set of planned workshops.

L-Imperattiv fis-sitt sena…

L-edukaturi dejjem jisħqu fuq l-importanza tat-tgħallim fejn it-tfal mhux jisimgħu biss, iżda jmissu b’idejhom dwar dak li qed jitgħallmu. B’hekk l-esperjenza tkun aktar siewja u tibqa’ dejjem f’moħħ l-istudenti.

L-għalliema tas-sitt sena ħarġet b’idea brillanti biex it-tfal jitgħallmu l-imperattiv. It-tfal sajru wraps u ħobż mixwi billi segwew istruzzjonijiet minn fuq karta li ġiet ippreparata għal dan il-għan.

Perezz li meta wieħed isajjar ikun hemm lista ta’ “ordnijiet” li wieħed irid isegwi, din l-attivita’ ħolqot opportunita’ biex filwaqt li l-istudenti jieħdu gost isajru, huma jitgħallmu dwar l-imperattiv.

Segwu dan il-video ippreparat b’ħafna dedikazzjoni minn Ms Borg tas-sitt sena. Proset lil tassew 🙂

Special Assemblies

Morning assemblies are an important part of the daily schedule in every educational institution. This gives the students, teachers and senior management team time to communicate, pray and learn together. Every class will be preparing special assemblies throughout the scholastic year.

Diversity (2)Diversity (4)

Diversity (1)

So far we had three special assemblies. The first one was prepared by Ms Borg and her year 6.1 students. During this assembly the students spoke to us about the importance of diversity. Each and every one of us has special qualities and talents, irrespective of their background.

Zumba (2)Zumba (1)Inclusion (1)

Another assembly was prepared by the year 5.2 class of Ms Micallef. Her students role played  a situation where one of the students was not allowed to play football with his team mates. Through this experience students were made aware of the injustice of bullying.

The year 4.2 class of Ms Said prepared a very active special assembly. All students were invited to dance the morning away through zumba, after being given a brief history of the origins of this dance.

Well done to all 😉

Skills Celebration Day (Jum iċ-Ċelebrazzjoni tal-Ħiliet) – 15/05/2013 – Year 6

Aside

Performance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Year 6 students:

The book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was written by Roald Dahl and narrates the story of 5 lucky children who managed to find the “Golden Tickets” hidden in chocolate wrappers by the famous chocolatier Willy Wonka. This ticket gave them the unique opportunity to visit the mysterious chocolate factory.

This was indeed a challenging performance but the Year  6 students’ rendition was fantastic.  They were greatly supported by their teachers Ms Marthese Morris and Ms Rosette Schembri Fedele, and their LSA Ms Marika Bezzina.
