St Nicholas Day 2013

Friday 6th December was a special day for our college since this happens to be the date when we celebrate the feast of St Nicholas who is the patron saint of our college.

San Nikola

The college principal called the schools to celebrate this special day together at Mgarr Parish Church. Student representatives from all the schools in our college, namely Rabat, Attard, Bahrija, Mgarr, Dingli, Mtarfa and Naxxar, attended the celebration of mass which was animated by the musicians and choir of Naxxar Secondary School.

After mass the students walked to our school where they watched a presentation prepared by Ms Camilleri, Mr Borg and Mr Zammit (all assistant heads in our college).

Animation by the singer Miriam Christine Borg followed. The students were ecstatic and had a whale of a time singing and dancing along with Miriam Christine Borg. A speech by Mr Sammut, our college principal, was then addressed to the pupils.

Finally the students had a surprise visit by, who other than, Santa Claus himself. Each student was given a goodie bag (sponsored by: Shamba Mgarr, Chef Choice, Alf Mizzi & Sons, Ta’ Karla, Half Way Store Attard, Il-Pet Shop Mgarr, Giormina and Victor’s Bakery Mgarr). During the celebration of St Nicholas Day all students donated some money which will be presented to Hospice Movement.

Well done to all the organisers, especially Mr Sultana and all other helpers inlcuding Mr Grech, Ms Micallef and Ms Chetcuti. Special thanks goes to Marthese, Joanne and Mary who prepared and cleaned the hall for this event.

Show and Tell

Show and tellStudents learn a number of literacy skills at school. Since the introduction of the Benchmark Exam, oracy has been given its importance, being recognised as one of the major skills required by students to enhance their literacy skills.

A good method to enhance oracy skills is by giving students the opportunity to speak to an audience about a topic, book, hobby, etc.

During one of the oracy sessions, Ms Tiziana, the year 6 teacher, asked her students to prepare a “show and tell” session about a book they read. Students who needed to enhance their Maltese language skills were asked to prepare a book in Maltese, while others were asked to prepare a book in English.

Every student was given time to speak to their classmates about the book they read, giving a brief description of the book, the genre of the book and whether they liked the book or not.

Dinosaurs galore…

Dino (1)During another mid-week session the year 3 students of Ms Rosette made a very interesting craft about dinosaurs.

The students made use of pasta to create their own dinosaur skeletons. Apart from enhancing their fine motor skills, students had to think of the best way to make use of pasta in order to create their own dinosaur skeletons.

The students has to put their creative skills at work in order to make sure that the pasta did, in actual fact, turn out to look like a dinosaur.

Well done once again 😉

Traditional Games on St Martin’s Day

St Martin Day

(The photos collage above was prepared by Ms Tiziana Borg, yr 6 teacher)

This year Mgarr primary celebrated St Martin’s Day with a difference. The School Council, together with 12 parents helpers organised a Traditional Games Fun Day for all the school. A number of games were organised including Iż-żunżna ddur iddur, Ċuċċu Trejn, Il-Ġurdien u l-Qattus, among other games.

Unfortunately the weather did not work in our favour since it rained all day. However the games were held in the school hall with some slight adjustments. The children enjoyed themselves.

In the afternoon “San Martin Bags” were given to the children. Well done to the organisers. A special thanks goes to the parents on the school council and the parent helpers 🙂

Dog puppets

During another mid-week session the year 3 students of Ms Rosette prepared dog puppets.

These puppets were made of recycled material. The students put in their own touch of creativity to create different dogs, all decorated to their tastes.

Well done for the hard work and keep up the good work 😉

Spooky Halloween

All students love Halloween. Decorating their classrooms with spooky ghosts makes their learning environment closer to reality.

The happy faces of the students say it all. Well done once again 😉

Learning English

English (4)Learning English is another challenge our students face every single day.

Nurturing love for languages is not always easy. Students may back away, fearing that they are not good or up to the challenge.

Working in a group helps our students overcome these inhibitions.

In the photo one can see the year 3 students of Ms Rosette working together to build up sentences by sequencing words in order. Such exercises help children to collaborate in order to learn new things.

Well done to the teacher for her innovative teaching methods.

Crafts related to Autum

During the mid week session, children have the time to prepare crafts related to the themes or topics being dealt with during that period of the year.

Autumn (4)Autumn (7)Autumn (8)

In the above photos we can see year 3 students of Ms Rosette doing a collage with leaves which have fallen from trees. Apart from doing crafts, the students learnt that during autumn many trees shed their leaves.

Another important lesson learnt is that one should never cut leaves from trees. All leaves used in this craft session were picked from the school garden which had fallen from trees.

Fun with maths

From the very first days of this scholastic year the year 3 students of Ms Rosette embarked on learning maths through play. It is a well know fact that some children fear maths. One of the reasons may be that maths is not presented in an attractive and hands on manner to children.

Ms Rosette, in collaboration with the Maths support teacher, has made sure that her students learn maths through play by doing practical sessions held in class and in the school yard.

Such learning styles ensure that students learn maths, while enjoying themselves.
