Fun with maths

From the very first days of this scholastic year the year 3 students of Ms Rosette embarked on learning maths through play. It is a well know fact that some children fear maths. One of the reasons may be that maths is not presented in an attractive and hands on manner to children.

Ms Rosette, in collaboration with the Maths support teacher, has made sure that her students learn maths through play by doing practical sessions held in class and in the school yard.

Such learning styles ensure that students learn maths, while enjoying themselves.

Special Assemblies

Every week a different class is to prepare a special assembly which is held in the school hall. The Year 4.1 students of Ms Angelique prepared a special assembly about Diversity using the metaphor of us being like a box of crayons. Each colour is wonderful in its own way and together the colours give us the wonderful world we live in. We all have our talents and by pooling our talents we can always achieve better.

The year 3.1 students of Ms Rosette prepared a special assembly highlighting the importance of consuming 5 fruit and vegetables every day. They also prepared a basket full of different fruit and vegetables including celery, broccoli, bananas, apples, carrots and citrus fruit such as lemons and oranges, among others.

The teacher highlighted the importance of consuming oranges which are high in vitamin C to prevent colds. Ms Rosette also mentioned that celery is a very healthy vegetable containing a high number of minerals and vitamins need by our body.

Cooking a Christmas Pudding

Our year 3 classes joined forces on 28th November 2013 to cook a Christmas pudding. The students, together with their teachers Ms Rosette, Ms Rodianne and Ms Charlene (a student teacher), enjoyed themselves cooking a traditional Christmas pudding.

Apart from cooking, this session was a very educational experience during which students learnt about the importance of hygiene when handling food, giving them the opportunity to appreciate the art of cooking and served to allow students time to socialise in a relaxed environment.

Well done to all for the delicious pudding 😉

Dogs Trusts Class Visits

At Dogs Trust’s teachers have a passion for animal welfare and a natural tendency to educate others about animal welfare.

Today, 19th November 2013, our students from year 1 to year 6 had a fun, exciting and educational workshop to help them to learn more about caring for dogs, responsible dog ownership and how to stay safe around dogs.

The students had the opporutnity to learn more about dogs through different interactive and experiential learning activities including brainstorming, role play, debates and discussions, group working, story telling and drama elements.

Dogs Trust believes that by educating the dog owners of tomorrow we can help to reduce the number of abandoned, stray and unwanted dogs in the future, and also have a healthier and happier society.

Year 3 pupils go mad for SuperT.

This year two year 3 classes at Mgarr Primary took the SuperTmatic competition on board. The year 3 teachers (Ms Sharon Richard and Ms Kylie Vella) together with the Maths Support Teacher introduced the children to the card game and its rules.
Every week time was allocated for SuperT game sessions. All the children involved looked forward to play SuperT and class teachers noted improvement in children regarding mental calculations. This game generated a lot of interest amongst parents too and in one of the Parents’ meetings, children were invited in to show their parents how it’s played.

What is SuperTmatik?
SuperTmatik Mental Maths is an educational game which combines mental stimulation and fun to develop skills in the four basic maths operations (+, -, x, ÷).

Mgarr Primary participated in the 7th International Mental Maths Competition

In February we started preparing our participants for the championships by explaining the rules. There was an intra-class tournament in both Year 3 classes. This was a knock-out tournament for students in the same class. Then there was an inter-class tournament which was contested by the champions and runners up of each class. The finalists were Matteo Stagno and Shanice Sammut.

Contrary to what we thought, the children who did not make it to the final continued to support the finalists until the day of the grand finale. It was a united effort so that the school chooses the best finalists to compete in their name.

The Results of the 2012/13 Edition
The finalists at Mgarr Primary did very well. Matteo Stagno placed 10th and Shanice Sammut the 76th in Category 2. 7% of the 247,000 participants in The SuperTmatik Championships enrolled in Category 2 which means that 17, 290 were playing in this category. St. Nicholas College Mgarr Primary is proud of all the pupils who took part in this competition.

Aside

Performance of Alice in Wonderland by Year 3 Students:

Alice in Wonderland was written by Lewis Carroll and was published in 1865. The story centres around a girl named Alice who, to satisfy her curiosity, followed a rabbit and fell in a deep hole. She ends up in a world full of peculiar characters, amongst which we find a rabbit who reads the time, a talking cat, soldiers made from a pack of cards, flowers that can talk and sing, a rabbit and a man who sing “happy unbirthday”, and a queen who was after everyone’s head!!

It was a great performance by all the students who were brilliantly directed by their teachers Ms Kylie Said and Ms Sharon Richards, and LSA’s Ms Amanda Portelli and Ms Dorianne Cuschieri.
