Learning letters and numbers through play

The K1.1 students of Ms Josianne Camilleri participated in various hands-on activities to learn about letter and numbers. These activities were prepared by the student teacher.

In the first activity, students had to write the letter ‘d’ in a sensory tray. The media used included sand, flour and ground cinnamon.

In a separate activity, students made the number 4 out of dry clay.

In the last activity students set up a colourful table with blocks, straws, plastic and wooden pegs, etc. Children had to create their own works of art, thus enhancing their creativity.

Alka Ceramics… A pottery experience

The year 1 classes of Ms Louise Cutajar and Ms Mathea Vassallo, visited the Alka ceramics. Our children were provided with a hands on experience with clay where they learnt how to make their own pieces. Students had also the opportunity to visit the Pottery Experience that consisted of a walk through the old workshop with life size figures, a video about ceramics in Malta and a tour to the musuem of WWII ceramic artifacts.

Growing potatoes in the school garden…

The kindergarten students of Ms Joanne Galea and Ms Josianne Camilleri joined forces to grow their own potatoes in the school garden. The students had to dig trenches to sew their potatoes and cover them back in soil. They are now watering the potatoes and look forward to gather their harvest in a few weeks’ time.

To complement this activity the students made a collage using vegetables.

eTwinning

The K1.3 students embarked on an eTwinning project. The students are working with partners from other countries in the EU. The first surprise reached the school by mail. A teddybear was sent, together with seeds. The students made a collage which is later to be sent to their partners.

Learning away from school

Learning does not only take place at school. It is of vital importance to provide alternative places for learning. Kindergarten students visited the Playmobil Factory. Apart from learning through play and socialising, the students had time to do a performance on stage.

In a separate outing, students met the firefighters who risk their life on a daily basis to save others.

A Prayer Space for Love…

Today the first prayer space in school was organised by Ms Borg Vella, assistant head, with Yr 4.1, Yr 4.2, Yr 5.2 and Yr 6.2.  Pupils were led to discuss what ‘breaks our hearts’ in terms of relationships with others.  The pupils were very responsive and mentioned death, bullying and other issues that hurt themselves and others.  At the end of the session pupils were asked to think of someone with a ‘broken heart’ and write his/her initials on a plaster which was then stuck on a broken heart.  A moment of silence and prayer followed.
