A learning experience for Yr 2.1

The Yr 2.1 students of  Ms Stephanie Azzopardi have embarked on an eTwinning Protject. In the above photos the students shared their experience with their partners from Greece by showing them how they learn shapes with the help of techonology using a Beebot. In this joint partnership both partners are using Beebot in teaching and learning.

Students learn counting in 2s and 3s using interlocking cubes, numbers, bee-bot and colourful pins to create a pattern using the Concrete, Practical, Abstract Approach.

Social Studies Fieldwork

As part of the Social Studies Curricula, the Year 3 students carried out a fieldwork in their school locality.  Students observed the environment surrounding the school.  They discussed and noted that some buildings are more modern than others,  some streets are also noisier than others,  what type of vehicles pass from a main street, what road signs one can find near a school and they also discussed the shops in the vicinity.  Finally, students had their well-deserved break at the local playing field.  The following photos show how much the students enjoyed doing this fieldwork.

Fieldwork at Mgarr

Both year 3 classes had a fieldwork around our school this month. The children enjoyed walking around the school to answer questions about what is found inside as well as outside of our school. Once outside the school we observed numerous things, including roads, cars, buildings, traffic signs, shops, the church, places of interest as well as recreational areas in Mġarr. Here the year 3.2 students are seen enjoying their recess time at the playground. This fieldwork was such an enjoyable experience!

Valletta Fieldwork

The students of Mr Cassar, in year 6.1, have been out and about in the capital city of Valletta. Students learn best when on site. The Valletta fieldwork is part of the social studies curriculum.

The students had a narrow escape with the weather since the minute they set foot on the bus to come back to school it started raining.

Fieldwork at Manikata

Friday 20th October was the first outing for year 2 children. At 9:00 a.m. we headed to Manikata. The coach dropped us off at Għajn Tuffieħa and we walked up to Manikata. Here we met a lady, with her friendly dog. The students were extremely happy about this.

The lady explained to the children about some flowers and trees found in the rural areas of the Maltese Islands. Then we proceeded to feed some of the animals including chickens, pigeons, goats, lambs, a donkey and a horse. The children also got to meet Buttuna and Lily.

The children were then invited in the picnic area where they enjoyed fresh bread with kunserva (tomato paste) and an apple. Finally the students had a hands-on session where they planted a bean plant to take with them home.

The students truly enjoyed each and every second.

Fieldwork around the locality of Mgarr

On Friday 17th February, the two Year 3 classes carried out the Social Studies fieldwork entitled Madwar l-Iskola Tagħna. The pupils started the fieldwork at school as they had to answer questions about it.  After, both classes observed the streets surrounding the school.   Amongst other things students had to write down what they could see in these streets, observe the vehicles passing from a busy street and mark down the shops one can find at the local square.

Finally, students had to answer questions about the local playing field.  There they also had a well deserved break.

Fieldwork at Birgu…

Birgu01On 19th February year 5 students had the opportunity to visit the historical city of Birgu. In doing so students could understand better an essential part of the topic entitled ‘L-Ibliet il-Qodma Maltin’ from the Social Studies Curriculum.  Indeed by roaming around this magnificent city  they  understood better the significant importance of Birgu in the past and nowadays.
Birgu02 Whilst visiting the Maritime Museum and the Inquisitor’s Palace students were very attentive and asked a lot of questions. In particular they liked the torture room and the prison cell best (at the Inquisitor’s Palace)!!
Birgu03

When we were arrived at the main square students were invited to visit a church run museum. There, a volunteer showed them the sword and hat which  Grand Master Jean de Valette used while fighting against the Turks.  Students also saw the altar where De Valette supposedly  used to pray before the Great Siege of 1565.

Birgu04As a success criteria students were asked to write a short paragraph about the outing and draw a picture.

It was indeed a fun educational outing!

Fieldwork at Mġarr

Mgarr

The Year 4 pupils went for their Social Studies fieldwork at Mġarr. During their visit the pupils had to find out information about their village. Such experiences help the students to become more aware of their home town, while learning in a more practical and hands on manner.
