Little Scientists at work…

Science01

The Year 5 students of Ms Miranda Cauchi prepared 2 experiments to share with their schoolmates during their special assembly. Every class is presenting experiments to students, as had been planned in the school development plan, with the aim of instilling a love towards science.

Science02

The students first showed students how to make a telephone by using plastic, cups, paper clips and a piece of string. Then they prepared a salt volcano with the aim of explaining that some substances are denser then others.

A Healthy Sandwich for a Healthy Write Up…

As an introduction to the English writing lesson: “How to write good instructions”, the Yr 5.2 students were asked to prepare their own delicious sandwiches.

Sandwich01

Following this activity and after a brief explanation by the teacher, students did an interactive whiteboard activity where they were asked to arrange the muddled instructions on how to wrap a present in the correct order.

Sandwich02

By the end of the lesson students were able to write the instructions on how to make a delicious sandwich, using bossy verbs and time connectives.

This made learning more fun 🙂

Marathon Walk

The school organised a Marathon Walk to raise funds for the purchase of literacy and numeracy resources for the students. The parents were very generous and a greatly appreciated donation was given to the school. 11 families donated more than €20. The highest amount collected was that of €32.60. A book will be given to all these families show our appreciation.

Marathon01

The students walked across the countryside of Mgarr, leaving from the school, walking to Bingemma and up to Lippijja. From there the students walked back to the school covering approximately 5.4km.

During the walk the students were given water break and lunch breaks. The students had leaflets prepared. The aim of these leaflets was for the students to appreciate all that can be found around them in this beautiful village of Mgarr.

Marathon02

Students also had the the opportunity to see a wind turbine, walk past a pig farm and a cemetry, see a number of green houses, olives trees and numerous fields. The fields were growing tomatoes, broad beans, marrows, onions, strawberries and artichokes.

Marathon03

Well done to all the students and members for staff for the effort put into this walk and heartfelt thanks to the parents helpers who made this a successful event.

A Visit to the Old Capital

Mdina01

On Monday 30th March 2015, the eve of the Easter holidays, the two Year 5 classes paid a visit to Malta’s old capital city, Mdina. Apparently many other schools had the same idea as we encountered quite a few groups of students in Mdina and its surroundings, as well as a multitude of tourists.

Mdina02

Yet we did have enough time and space to explore this city and its fabulous treasures. We walked up and down many of the narrow and winding streets and spacious squares, stopping here and there to admire the various churches and palaces, amongst which the magnificent St. Paul’s Cathedral and the most interesting National Museum of Natural History hosted inside Vilhena Palace, which we inspected from top to bottom. We passed through the city’s three entry gates and observed the splendid view from atop the bastions. As we were during Holy Week we also visited a Good Friday Statues Exhibition at St. Agatha’s Chapel. Once again we had a very positive and enlightening school outing.

Enhancing Creativity through Art…

A holistic education programme would be incomplete if students are not encouraged to enhance their creativity through artistic skills and techniques. Our art teacher, Mr Scicluna, does his utmost to encourage students to be creative while creating their own works of art using various techniques.

Well done to our little artists 🙂

A Taste of History… Birgu…

Birgu01Malta offers many cultural treasures which one can visit and the old city of Birgu (Vittoriosa) is indeed one of them. The two Year 5 classes could well appreciate this last Thursday 19th February 2015 as they roamed the winding village streets, passed through old gateways and admired ancient buildings and monuments, breathing history at every step.

Birgu02

We had the opportunity of visiting the Inquisitor’s Palace and the Malta Maritime Museum, each one of them worth a visit to Birgu on its own. Major restoration works are currently in progress on Fort St. Angelo, but we did manage to take a little peep at it as we enjoyed a walk along the beautiful Grand Harbour Marina in the surprisingly warm sunshine. At the end of the day we all felt enriched by our experience and a bit prouder of being Maltese.

World Tree Day 2015

Tree Day

Ms Rodgers, Eko Skola co-ordinator and assistant head at our school, has embarked on a useful mission at our school on 16th January 2015. This being World Tree Day, the students were asked to participate in a school based drawing competition. The students who drew the best 6 drawings were awarded a book.

Later on, during the day, students from yr 4, 5 and 6, participated in a clean up campaign of the school gardens. The students did a fantastic job and 4 large garbage bags of waste were collected.

The younger classes participated in other activities to raise awareness about the importance of trees. Below one can see photos of the yr 1.2 student of Ms Marilyn Bugeja doing a bark rubbing activity. This activity was a follow up of a lesson during which students talked about trees, their shapes and the different leaves and trunks.Tree01

Below are the year 2.2, of Ms Maureen Borg, during an art lesson in preparation for the drawing competition held by Ms Rodgers for the students.

It’s that time of the year again…

Novena Day1December – an important month for us Christians… It reminds of the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ. During this month we remember the hardships Mary and Joseph had to face and the poor circumstances in which the Lord chose to be born. It is a time of reflection about the important things in life – not material ones, but spiritual ones.

Novena Day2

Students are encouraged to prepare a special assembly in a run up for Christmas. This special assembly is spread over 9 days, hence it is called the novena. During these assemblies the students, under the direction of their teachers and LSAs, and with the help of Ms Borg Vella, assistant head, the students explore moral values and issues which remind us of love, peace and generosity.

Novena Day3

This is also an opportunity for students to sing Christmas carols, to animate our morning assemblies and to enhance their self-esteem. Merry Christmas to all 🙂

Theatre in Education… X’se Ndoqqu?

Drama
On the 19th November 2014, the year 5.2 students of Ms Sharon Calleja, went on an extremely interesting outing at the Drama Unit in Blata l-Bajda. First the children talked about musical instruments and how they are played. They mentioned the wind instruments, strings and percussions. Then, they played a game called Maestro where they imitated playing a particular instrument and made sounds that mimic the sound made by that instrument.  In another activity, the children were given flashcards with pictures of different musical instruments. In pairs they mimed how to play that instrument and the rest of the children had to guess which instrument it was. Later the students went to the theatre and watched a group of actors gathering for rehearsals and discussing how to go about the play they should perform. Finally, the students saw the actual play about Ulysses being performed and they were involved in the play by playing the musical instruments during the performance when instructed to do so. This was a very enjoyable experience for everyone 🙂
