Cooking and Writing combined…

cook01

Last Wednesday the year 5.2 students of Ms Miranda and Ms Doreen, started the day by making their own special pizza. As one can see from the photos, students were creative enough their make faces with their pizza toppings. Children practice fractions when they cut their pizza into equal parts. Together, as a team, they cleaned the kitchen and afterwards they wrote up the recipe of their pizza.cook02

They also planted their own sunflower seeds while learning about the essentials required for a plant to grow, namely, air, sun and water.Science K2.2 The K2.2 students of Ms Joan had a volcano erupting in their class, followed by a session about magnets.Science K2.3 The K2.3 students of Ms Marija explored scientific facts about density and gravity.Science Yr 1 The Yr 1.1 students of Ms Marilyn, together with their LSA, Ms Josephine along with the Yr 1.2 students of Ms Louise learnt about magnetism and density, while creating rainbows in a jar.Science Yr 2.1 The Yr 2.1 students of Mr Noa, together with their LSA, Ms Charmaine, learnt about dinosaurs before they became extinct.Science Yr 2.2 The Yr 2.2 students of Ms Janice, together with their LSA, Ms Anna, had various activities exploring ways of saving mother earth and learning about different habitats. Children produced their own bar graphs and learnt about the life cycles of various insects. They further explored their mathematical skills in doubling and halving.Science Yr 3.1 The Yr 3.1 students of Ms Rosette, together with their LSA Ms Miriam, created their own patterns and explored concepts about shapesScience Yr 3.2 The Yr 3.2 students of Ms Stephanie, together with their LSA, Ms Josette, made a volcanic eruption followed by sink or float activities. Finally they learnt about volume and length through various work shops.Science Yr 4.1 The Yr 4.1 students of Ms Angelique and their LSA Ms Graziella held an inquiry-based investigation on “How can we keep the paper dry when immersed into the water and why?”. Another activity was about Growing plants. Students had to examine the stages of the growth of a plant. Each week they kept a record the growth of the plant and compare to previous results. During the Maths-Science day the children had to draw a graph to show the data collected.
Science Yr 4.2 The Yr 4.2 students of Ms Claudine plotted bar graphs of their pea pods which had been sown the previous week. They also made a volcanic eruption and learnt about volcanoes.Science Yr 5.1 The Yr 5.1 students of Dr Micallef had to work in groups to solve various mind boggling problems about fractions. Even the parents had a hard time at coming up with solutions.Science Yr 5.2 The Yr 5.2 students of Ms Miranda, and their LSA, Ms Doreen, learnt about the solar system. They had to set up the solar system using a to scale model. This activity was followed by mathematical problem solving and a science quiz. Science Yr 6The Yr 6 students of Ms Raisa and Mr Cassar, together with their LSAs Ms Kathleen, Ms Audrey and Ms Ruth had 3 workshops. In the first workshop students had to find out what happens when mixing milk, food colouring and soap. The second workshop was about creating music with different levels of water and tubes. During another workshop students had to measure the length of various objects using meter rulers.

Glorious Citta’ Notabile (Mdina)

Mdina01On Tuesday 22nd March 2016, the last day of school before the Easter holidays, the two Year 5 classes paid a visit to Malta’s old capital city, Mdina. While exploring this wonderful city, we mingled with the many tourists coming from various countries, some of which stopped to say hello or comment about the beauty of this historic medieval city.

Mdina02Together we experienced the thrill of leaping into the past as we walked up and down many of the narrow and winding streets and spacious squares, stopping here and there to admire the various churches and palaces, amongst which the impressive St. Paul’s Cathedral, Palazzo Falson and the most interesting National Museum of Natural History hosted inside Vilhena Palace. We stopped for two breaks, one atop the bastions, from where we could admire the splendid view, and another in the public garden found in the restored Mdina ditch. The children had such a good time while learning to appreciate our national heritage.

Rainbow in a Jar…

During an art lesson year 5.2 students did a rainbow salt jar project with the class teacher. Students brought an empty glass jar from home , a packet of salt and coloured chalk (pastel colours).

Art01

The teacher gave each pupil a piece of rough paper where students poured some salt on it and then they rubbed the chalk back and forth across the salt to give it the desired colour. Carefully children started pouring the layer of coloured salt into the jar.  They repeated this process, pouring layers at angles and around the jar to get interesting strata.  They repeated until the jar was completely full.  At the end children made sure not to shake the rainbow salt jar as this would mix the layers up.

Art02

Students loved the process of making it, the way the colours looked next to each other and how the layers undulated in the jar.  Indeed some of them did other rainbow salt jars at home.

Art03

We put theses rainbow jars on the classroom’s window sills to decorate the class.

Fieldwork at Birgu…

Birgu01On 19th February year 5 students had the opportunity to visit the historical city of Birgu. In doing so students could understand better an essential part of the topic entitled ‘L-Ibliet il-Qodma Maltin’ from the Social Studies Curriculum.  Indeed by roaming around this magnificent city  they  understood better the significant importance of Birgu in the past and nowadays.
Birgu02 Whilst visiting the Maritime Museum and the Inquisitor’s Palace students were very attentive and asked a lot of questions. In particular they liked the torture room and the prison cell best (at the Inquisitor’s Palace)!!
Birgu03

When we were arrived at the main square students were invited to visit a church run museum. There, a volunteer showed them the sword and hat which  Grand Master Jean de Valette used while fighting against the Turks.  Students also saw the altar where De Valette supposedly  used to pray before the Great Siege of 1565.

Birgu04As a success criteria students were asked to write a short paragraph about the outing and draw a picture.

It was indeed a fun educational outing!

Sunny Fieldwork at Marsaxlokk

Marsaxlokk01

On Thursday 12th November 2015, our Year 5 pupils went to Marsaxlokk to carry out a Social Studies fieldwork exercise valid for their half-yearly exams. The weather was fantastic for this time of the year (thanks to St. Martin) which put a smile on everyone’s face. Marsaxlokk02

Friendly fishermen and street hawkers readily exchanged a few words with the children, and also complimented the latter on being very well behaved. Many tourists were also amused to see them diligently carrying out their tasks, and the kids repaid their attention with lots of waves and hellos. Marsaxlokk03

It was a truly enjoyable and instructive experience for the children, who were keen in showing their appreciation both during the outing as well as following our return to school. What a fun way to learn! Marsaxlokk04

Special Assembly…Biomes

Biomes

The Year 5.1 students of Dr Micallef prepared a special assembly about biomes. Biomes are different places on earth home to different species. Biomes have different conditions e.g. rainforests, deserts, etc. Animals and plants have by time adapted to living in various conditions. Unfortunately the effect of climate change is harming these biomes to the detriment of all living things.
