The Malta National Aquarium…Educational Outing

Aqua02On Monday 17th March 2014 the two Year 5 classes visited the Malta National Aquarium in Qawra. It was an extraordinary experience walking around the passageways of this virtual underwater environment whilst admiring the various species of fish and other marine life so skilfully gathered in this one place. The children could hardly contain their excitement as they pointed towards one creature or another, some familiar by name or by sight, others totally exotic. What a wonderful way to learn to appreciate what nature has to offer!

Birgu & Marsaxlokk educational outing

On Friday 21st February 2014 the two Year 5 classes went to visit two important places in the south of Malta: the old city of Birgu and Marsaxlokk fishing village.

Birgu001 In Birgu they toured the characteristic narrow streets and identified a number of historical buildings and monuments. They visited the Inquisitor’s Palace (where there was some filming taking place) and then walked along the waterfront up to Fort St. Angelo, while admiring the beautiful yachts berthed at the Yacht Marina.

Birgu002

In Marsaxlokk they could observe the various fishing boats and nets from up close, while some pupils took the opportunity to speak with a few of the fishermen and women who were busy at their work.

Marsaxlokk001

In both places we could notice a good number of tourists enjoying Malta’s sights or savouring a tasty meal at one of the numerous restaurants we encountered on our path. Delicious!

Science and Technolgy Project Yr 5 and Yr 6

Science Yr 5The year 5 and year 6 students have been busy during the past science lessons. The students were given a task to build  a crane which could raise and lower a load. The load had to be raised or lowered by 50 cm.

Science Yr 6

The students were not allowed to use metal objects (except for the hook of the crane). They were allowed to use cardboard boxes. Students were divided into groups and had to design their own crane, build it, make a suitable base to keep the crane steady (e.g. by using stones, wood, etc.) and they had to test out their crane.

The students enjoyed doing their projects while enhancing team building skills. Well done to all 🙂

Special Assemblies

Morning assemblies are an important part of the daily schedule in every educational institution. This gives the students, teachers and senior management team time to communicate, pray and learn together. Every class will be preparing special assemblies throughout the scholastic year.

Diversity (2)Diversity (4)

Diversity (1)

So far we had three special assemblies. The first one was prepared by Ms Borg and her year 6.1 students. During this assembly the students spoke to us about the importance of diversity. Each and every one of us has special qualities and talents, irrespective of their background.

Zumba (2)Zumba (1)Inclusion (1)

Another assembly was prepared by the year 5.2 class of Ms Micallef. Her students role played  a situation where one of the students was not allowed to play football with his team mates. Through this experience students were made aware of the injustice of bullying.

The year 4.2 class of Ms Said prepared a very active special assembly. All students were invited to dance the morning away through zumba, after being given a brief history of the origins of this dance.

Well done to all 😉

Skills Celebration Day (Jum iċ-Ċelebrazzjoni tal-Ħiliet) – 15/05/2013 – Year 5

Aside

Performance of Iljieli Għarbin” (Arabian Nights) by Year 5 students:

Arabian Nights is a collections of stories that were written by a number of different authors along the centuries. It is said that most of these stories originated from Persia and India and later on other stories from the Middle East, Egypt and China were added to the collection. These stories used to be narrated by traders during their voyages to China to purchase silk.

The students of year 5 gave a great rendition of three popular stories, namely, Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, The Enchanted Horse and Ali Baba, but they did not tell the audience how the stories end in order to encourage them to read the stories themselves! Dr. Simone Micallef, their teacher, was the mastermind behind this performance.
