The Lion and the Mouse…

The K1.2 students of Ms Josianne Camilleri have been kept very busy during the past week. The KGA took the opportunity to teach her students about friendship using the story of The Lion and the Mouse. This story promotes diversity and emphasises the fact everyone matters, irrespective of their age, size, colour, gender etc.

The KGA made use of this lesson to teach her students maths shapes and colours.

Finally the students enjoyed making a collage of the lion and the mouse to celebrate their friendship. Well done 🙂

Ħallini Ħieles…

Hieles01The K1.3 students of Ms Joanne Galea have been busy learning about animals. The KGA made sure her students would appreciate these friendly creatures while giving them some food for thought.

The students were made to reflect about the importance of leaving birds free, rather than captured in a cage or, even worse, mummified as a trophy. This activity was linked to Dinja Waħda project.

Hieles02

The students made a replica of the earth (all craft was made from recycled material). Then each student coloured in a bird. Each bird was displayed flying around the earth. The birds were also used in a maths lesson to enhance number and value recognition.

On a different note, below we see the students proudly presenting their work on the class notice board. Since students have been learning about animals, the theme was appropriately chosen as Ir-Razzett”.

Road Safety Talks

On 18th March 2014, representatives from Transport Malta visited our school and held a session about transport and road safety for our year 2 and year 3 students.

Road Safety

During this session the students had the opportunity to learn about road safety and become more aware of basic safety rules when crossing roads or using bicycles and zebra crossings in pedestrian areas.

Animal Farm…

For the past days, I had the opportunity to see kindergarten assistants and LSAs decorating their notice boards in a very artistic manner. I was lucky enough to see the work in progress of the notice board of K2.3 since this is very close to my office.

Animal Collage

The students are learning about animals and thus the notice board is being set up with the theme of a farm. The students were involved in setting up this notice board as one can see from the pictures above.

Well done to Ms Joan Vella and Ms Anna Cassar 😉

Kinder epxeriencing milking a cow…

The Kinder 1.4 students of Ms Janice have been learning about animals. During one of the activities Ms Janice decided to give her students a hands-on experience of cow milking. The students enjoyed this activity, while appreciating the importance of milk and nurturing love for cows 🙂

Commonwealth Day

Common01

10th March marked the celebration of Commonwealth day. To date there are 53 countries forming part of Commonwealth. Members states of Commonwealth aim for “the development of free and democratic societies and the promotion of peace and prosperity to improve the lives of all peoples of the Commonwealth.”

Common02

The year 4.1 students of Ms Angelique prepared a special assembly on 10th March 2014. During the assembly the yr 4.1 students sang a song and gave some information about Commonwealth to their school mates. All the other school students coloured in a poster provided to the school from the Education Department Stores. These were displayed in the school hall.

Consumer’s Day

Many of us may not be aware that on 15th March we celeberate Consumers’ Day. We are all consumers in one way or another. During their special assembly, the year 6.1 students of Ms Tiziana Borg, gave our students some information about who consumers are, their rights and their obligations.

Consumer

The children presented a short play during which a young lady went to purchase a dress. She later called the consumer department to place a complaint. The aim behind this short play was to make students aware that consumers are to make wise decisions when purchasing items and that when placing a complaint, this must be for a valid reason.

Carnival 2014

Carnival06Carnival is that time of the year when students, parents and all members of staff have some time to wind down from the busy school routine. At Mgarr Primary School carnival brings a number of traditions. The main events for the day were the dance stunts prepared by the parents and teachers.

Carnival05

A presentation by year 5.2 students of Dr. Micallef kicked off the programme. This presentation gave a detailed explanation of the origins of carnival and traditions and food typical of this time of the year.

Carnival03

Following this presentation parents and teachers danced to the cheers of the audience. It was very entertaining seeing the team of parents entertaining the audience, followed by the team of teachers, KGAs and LSAs who took us back in time with their dancing.

Carnival04

Following these performances children were surprised by a slide show presentation diplaying photos of all members of staff of when they were still young. Students and parents enjoyed playing this game trying to guess who photos represented.

Carnival02

Finally the students had time to dance along to music and showing off a colourful display of costumes. Well done to everyone for making this event yet another success 😉

Birgu & Marsaxlokk educational outing

On Friday 21st February 2014 the two Year 5 classes went to visit two important places in the south of Malta: the old city of Birgu and Marsaxlokk fishing village.

Birgu001 In Birgu they toured the characteristic narrow streets and identified a number of historical buildings and monuments. They visited the Inquisitor’s Palace (where there was some filming taking place) and then walked along the waterfront up to Fort St. Angelo, while admiring the beautiful yachts berthed at the Yacht Marina.

Birgu002

In Marsaxlokk they could observe the various fishing boats and nets from up close, while some pupils took the opportunity to speak with a few of the fishermen and women who were busy at their work.

Marsaxlokk001

In both places we could notice a good number of tourists enjoying Malta’s sights or savouring a tasty meal at one of the numerous restaurants we encountered on our path. Delicious!

The session kicked off with some warm up and stretching exercises, emphasising the need for exercise required by our body on a daily basis. A brief dicussion about breakfast followed. The students were then introduced to varying fruit and vegetables which were sorted according to colour. Finally the students prepared fruit kebabs with fruit  which was kindly provided by the Local Council.
